Story
Hi,
Thanks in advance for your sponsorship. As I said on my email/tweet/status update, I'm running for a charity called Wateraid. The charity is based in Britain but it funds projects to provide clean water and sanitation around the world.
The main inspiration for doing this was reading an article by a Salisbury local historian called Ruth Newman about the Salisbury cholera epidemic of 1849. 192 people died in the epidemic - about 1 in 45 of Salisbury's population.
It's an interesting and dramatic story in many ways. The local press, politicians and landowners tried to portray the public health campaign as 'health and safety gone mad', but eventually caved in under public pressure and the mounting death toll.
I'm not quite old enough to remember the '49 sickness, but the point is that the same thing is happening in different parts of the world today. Cholera and other water borne diseases were and are easy to prevent, so I thought Wateraid was worth trying to raise a few quid for.
If you're interested Wateraid's website is http://www.wateraid.org/uk/
Cheers my dears,
Matt
