Story
Thanks for visiting my fundraising page.
Together with about 60 or 70 people, I'm undertaking the Fireflies ride - cycling from Geneva to Cannes starting on June 16 to raise money for Leuka.
As the crow flies, it's only about 300km, but there's a small obstacle in the way - the Alps. We will be covering over 1000 horizontal kilometres (over 600 miles)... I don't really want to think about how many vertical kilometres we will climbing, but we will be ascending 20 of the meanest Alps in the book, tackling exactly the same mountain passes the pros climb during the Tour de France. And this year, just to get one up on the Tour riders, we'll be tackling Mont Ventoux, a particularly mean lump of rock plonked right in the middle of the vineyards of Provence, a month before they do.
Leuka mainly supports a cutting-edge leukaemia research and treatment unit at Hammersmith Hospital. I don't know anyone who's suffered from the disease, but specialists consider research into curing and treating leukaemia particularly worthwhile because it may provide breakthrough insights into all types of cancer - so it's deserving of my sweat and your money!
Now I know I'm a bit of a nutter and do this sort of thing for fun, but this will be DIFFICULT. Eight days' riding, 1,000 kilometres and 20 summits before descending to the Croisette in Cannes. I am paying ALL trip costs myself, so everything you give will go to the charity. In these difficult times, charities are suffering badly and need every penny they can get. Even £5 will be gratefully received.
For more about the ride, including videos showing the scale of our task, please have a look at the Fireflies website.
Finally, thanks to Julian Newby and Boutique Editions (who produce the Lions Daily News)... a) for getting me into this, and b) then sponsoring me so generously.
Thanks once again. Max
