Mont Blanc climb 2010 · 13 June 2010

At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.

Story

In June 2010, a team of 7 will attempt to reach the summit of Mont Blanc, Western Europe's highest peak, which stands at 15,782 ft.

The reason behind this challenge is to raise money and awareness for the Alzheimer’s Society NI and it is dedicated in memory of Bernie Reid who passed away in June 2008 after suffering from Dementia for many years.

Our goal is to raise £30,000 to help sufferers of Dementia, their families and carers. We hope that the money we raise will provide a supportive infrastructure for those in need and aim to improve the day to day lives of those who suffer from this disease.

Over the past 11 months we have held several fundraising events to help us raise money, the Spin-a-thon Kick-Off event was a huge success. The event was held over 2 days: Sat 31st Oct was in Bloomfields Shopping Centre and Sat 14th Nov was in the Flagship Centre in Bangor.
A team of 8 successfully completed their aim, which was to cover the return distance from Belfast – Cork (343.49 kms) in 16 hours.

We also held a bag pack, on Saturday 12th December, in Marks & Spencers, Bloomfields shopping centre, Bangor. The team spent 7 hours packing shoppers groceries with Christmas cheer and spirit :-)

On Saturday 30th January 2010 we held a 'Camel Racing' night in the Bryansburn Inn, Bangor. This event proved to be something very different which everyone enjoyed! The team managed to raise over £1,000 on the night so thanks to all those that came along.

Team MB then went on to hold a Charity Pub Quiz on Friday 26th February 2010. Given that this was a small fundraising night we received a lot of help and support and it proved a very worthwhile night. Team MB would like to thank you all for your help and support at this entertaining evening.

We recently had another bag pack in Marks & Spencers, Bloomfields shopping centre, Bangor on Saturday 27th March. Team MB spent the day helping shoppers pack their bags and managed to raise an impressive £1,176.

In April we had another exciting Spin-a-thon in Bloomfields Shopping Centre and Flagship Shopping Centre, Bangor.
Team MB competed against UTV's Marc Mallett and his own team of cyclist in Bloomfields and against Oceanis Fitness in Flagship. The aim was for each team to cycle the distance from Belfast-Cork (343.49 kms) in 8 hours with 7 cyclists in each team. Each cyclist covered an impressive 49 kms each in the fastest time possible.
Team MB were the winning team on both days and managed to raise a huge £3,013!!!!!

Team MB held their flagship event, the MB 4 Alzheimer's Gala Ball on Saturday 8th May in the HIlton Hotel Belfast. The event was an overwhelming success and we received the team raised an outstanding £8626. The night was a huge success and all who attended the evening enjoyed themselves tremendously and the team would like to thank you for your support!!!!
