Steve, Peter, John and I are part of a team of 13 children and adults who are travelling to Kenya in April to spend 2 weeks working with a charity called Turning Point Trust. We are raising funds for the trip and also to fund a social worker for a year.
Turning point, www.tptrust.org work in the Kibera slum in Nairobi which is home to around one million people and is the largest slum in East Africa. It is about 5km southwest of the centre of Nairobi and is a dense mass of single-roomed houses, intersected by a complex network of dirt alleyways through which run channels of rubbish and raw sewage. Turning Point offers street kids regular meals, healthcare, education and training.
Our aim is to raise enough money to cover the costs of the trip but also to enable us to make a substantial donation to the life changing work of Turning Point. We hope this will fund a social worker for a whole year, and enable a single mum and her children to be given independence by setting her up on a small plot of fertile farming land outside Nairobi. Another of our aims is to build links between ourselves and the work in Kenya so that we can support it on an on-going basis.
We are really excited by this opportunity to help change peoples lives.
