We pioneer life-saving cancer research to help us beat cancer

Story

Hello and welcome to the Melksham Group's page!

I'm Marie and I'd like to tell you all about our Melksham group which was formed in February 2013 by Rob and myself who had previously fund raised for Swindon Cancer Research UK. let me introduce you to: Liza, Dave, Christine and Sandra

We have all been touched in some way or another by Cancer, and our aim is to raise as much money for Cancer Research UK for them to carry out more research and clinical trials and to help cancer sufferers have access to kinder drugs and a better chance of beating cancer.

Our little group are working very hard in holding events and so far this year we've held quiz nights, curry nights, a party night, a grand summer raffle, a silent tyre bid, Peter Andre concert ticket bid where Liza and I were lucky enough to meet and chat with Peter (Wowcher!) Dirty Boots Music Festival and lots of store collections, which have seen us raise over £20,000 so far! It's an amazing amount of money which will make such a difference to Cancer Research UK!

Throughout 2014 we have planned lots of events and you can follow us on facebook: Cancer Research uk Melksham Group to find out what's happening and please come along to support us and have fun at the same time, or donate on our justgiving page so that we can help people to beat cancer!

In 2012 Cancer Research UK made some amazng progress, and I would like to share a few things with you so that you can see for yourself just how much incredible work our charity has performed.

Our researchers discover a drug that can inflate the blood vessels inside pancreatic tumours, allowing drugs to get in and kill cancer cells.

Our Scientists develop a fluorescent dye that can spot the earliest stages of oesophageal cancer, which could lead to more efficient diagnosis in the future.

At our London Research Institute, Scientists discover that a combination of two existing drugs might be effective against Lung cancer caused by smoking.

New figures show that 33,000 long term sufferers of childhood cancer are alive in the UK...

£90 Could enable one of our Cancer information nurses to attend a study day to keep their knowledge up to date.

£510 could pay for ten pairs of cryogenic gloves, worn when retrieving very cold samples from a -80% freezer or a liquid nitrogen storage tank.

£1,000 could cover around two months running expenses for a clinical trial investigating hormone therapy to improve the treatment of prostrate cancer.

£550,000 could fund a large programme of research for around a year aiming to discover new drugs to treat breast cancers that are resistant to other treatments, finding effective new treatments for women with cancer that no longer responds to chemo or hormone therapy is crucial if we are to improve their chances of surviving the disease.

So you see every £ really can make all the difference! Please help us to make a bigger difference and support both our group and Cancer Research UK in helping to save lives.

Thank you!

Kind Regards,

Marie x
