Whether you have seen them on safari or at the zoo, there's no denying that Rhino's are magnificent creatures.  Men dressed in Rhino costumes yomping 26 miles around London are less so   But safaris are expensive and daddy ain't taking you to the zoo anymore, so on 22 April I am bringing the Rhino to the streets of London.  It will be hot, it will be sweaty, but I'm hoping it will be a lot of fun. 

I will be running for Save the Rhino.  The reason is that having had a Rhino skinned to provide the costume, I need to raise enough money to save at least one of the beasts to balance my account. 

Seriously, Rhinos face three human challenges:

Poachers kill rhinos for the price they can get for the horns;

Land encroachment, illegal logging and pollution are destroying their habitat; and

Political conflicts adversely affect conservation programmes.

At one stage the Black Rhino population was reduced by 96% thanks to human activities.

Due to a lot of hard work by conservationists, numbers are now beginning to rise again.  However protecting and managing a Rhino population is a real challenge that costs energy and money.  Save the Rhino plays a critical role in supporting these projects.
