Story
Having successfully completed 650km for the Dallaglio Cycle Slam and 549km on the London to Paris earlier this year, I will now be undertaking 1000 miles in a unique and challenging motorcycle adventure across Africa.
For 8 days I will tackle dusty and demanding riding through some of South Africa's most rugged and isolated terrains along the famous Wild Coast from Durban to Port Elizabeth, with all funds raised being given to DebRA and the EB community they support. DebRA are all over the world, as is EB... so I have cosen a short video from DebRA in Ireland to show you a little about why I am raising money for this cause.
I have been aware of DebRA for a few years and the great work they have been doing providing help, not only to the children and adults who have this terrible incurable condition (Epidermolysis Bullosa), but also giving support, practical help and reassurance to their parents and carers. EB is a currently incurable genetic skin condition. In its most severe forms, EB is fatal in infancy, or young childhood, and can cause an aggressive & fatal skin cancer in teenagers and young adults. EB causes a breakdown in the natural proteins that hold the skin and internal membranes, causing terrible blistering and open sores at the slightest touch. To prevent infection and even more damage, blisters have to be lanced and dressed every day a painful procedure, taking up to 3 hours. Excessive blistering creates scar tissue which can cause toes and fingers to fuse together. Scar tissue can also cause the oesophagus to narrow, making eating difficult. Sadly low levels of awareness of this condition hampers fundraising, so I am always pleased to be able to bring some attention to this amazing cause.
I hope you feel able to dig deep into your hearts and pockets and give, even in these hard times there are people who still need your help !!!
