Story
Hi and thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I am attempting to run the length of the pebbled beach between West Bay and Portland in Dorset which incorporates "The Fleet" on 19th July 2010. It works out around 19 miles by the time I get to my destination of Osprey Leisure Centre on Portland or at least that's what I worked out by google earth!
The run is being done as a personal challenge to myself as a relatively active serviceman with the Royal Navy.
I will be the only runner with no support (although anyone is welcome to join if they so wish) so it is made particularly difficult by the fact that I will have to carry my own supplies. The run is being carried out to raise awareness for the fantastic RN and RM children's charity which has helped my family recently during a bit of a bad patch and proceeds will be split between this and the children's swimming club; The Tornadoes of South Dorset http://www.tornadoesuk.co.uk/. If my target is exceeded then I would like (and will request) that all further donations above this amount stay within the RN RM children's fund.
I would also like to mention within this forum the incredible support that the Naval Personnel and Family Services and 848 Squadron have provided within my home base of Yeovilton. They have been absolutely instrumental and so very understanding during an incredibly difficult and testing period in my family's life and I would like to just give something back so feel that bigging them up here is the least I can do! Another chapter in my life which proves the ROYAL NAVY is a fantastic organisation which allows you to strive for your goals and provides top class support when you really need it. You really should join now if you haven't already!
From the small amount of training I have done so far I know that this will be a killer task, running on the Sandy small stones of Westbay is difficult but these get steadily larger and more difficult to negotiate until the the final destination is reached.
I will be dropped off at 6am and have already instructed my wife to smoke me a kipper as I will be back in time for breakfast. To make matters even worse there is a "Fun Gala" that afternoon at the Leisure centre which involves parents and instructors racing each other and I have somehow persuaded myself that i will be in a fit state to do it.
I realise it may seem a big challenge to some but am totally humbled by others who manage to do such things (and much worse) as part of their working day and hope that the proceeds raised may help others in the way it has help us!
Thanks in advance for your generosity
Mick
