Story

Okay, so why is Mike Dee running around Mote Park in Maidstone in October?

On my birthday this year, my wife found out that she was pregnant and it was the happiest day of my life. We celebrated with our friends and family and set about planning the arrival of the youngster. I became a total food fascist and would only let Debbie eat the freshest, healthiest food that I'd cook with my own fair hands, insisted that I did all the housework, changed the cat litter, and pretty much took care of everything else in the house.

On the day of of our three month scan, we were both nervous and excited to see our kiddy for the first time. However, as soon as the ultrasound unit was placed on Debbie we knew there was something wrong. It was then that the midwife told us we had suffered a missed miscarriage, and that our baby had died.

A missed miscarriage is where the baby passes away but does not physically leave the body, so you don't know it's happened.

After the trauma of this, it took us a few weeks to come to terms with what had happened. But, being very much in love and wanting to start a family, we tried for a second time. I come from a history of fertile Italians so we were soon expecting again. However, at six weeks, Debbie suffered another miscarriage.

We've not carried a baby to term yet but I have three beautiful nieces and a nephew all of whom have loving parents. The pain we felt during both of our losses, coupled with the love we have for the kids in our family means that I really want to do something to help. One of our dear friends introduced me to SANDS when she saw how hard we were taking our first loss. SANDS are a Stillborn and Neonatal Death charity and to know there are people out there helping grieving parents inspired me.

It's only a 5km run I know but to be fair, I'm a fat bloke who's been smoking on and off for twelve years. Plus, as I'm a cog in the corporate machine, I'll be running in a full suit and tie. That's got to be worth a couple of quid, hasn't it?

Please have a look at the SANDS website to find out more about their work.

Thanks all,

Mike
