UPDATE JANUARY 2009.....
OVER £3,700 RAISED FOR THE 2 CHOSEN CHARITIES. FANTASTIC AND THANKS TO EVERYONE INVOLVED.
Hi Everyone
CHARITY FOOTBALL MATCH -ROYSTON TOWN VETERANS vs EX CAMBRIDGE UTD /
CITY SELECT XI, PLAYED AT GARDEN WALK, ROYSTON, TUES 11 NOV.
It was March of this year that I was diagonosed with lung cancer.
The doctors could not believe I was still physically playing football , although many of the Vets would say that they hadn't noticed any real change in the way I was playing anyway!!
The last few months have been interesting to say the least - chemotherapy, hopes, disappointments, a few ups and downs - but you have to remain positive all the time.
After over 15 years playing with the Vets, I was initially a little embarrassed when it was suggested they wanted to arrange a Charity game , in my name. I said, "hang on, I'm not dead yet and you normally do this when someone has actually gone!".
It was when I was asked to nominate a charity and I came across the East Anglian Childrens Hospice (EACH), that I suddenly realised that I could really make a difference to others, while I could.
Cancer is not nice for anyone. But if one is in one' 40's, 50's or 60's , at least it could be said that you have had a reasonably good innings. For children with cancer, they haven't had that opportunity. They haven't even got out to the wicket. Let alone had the chance to build an innings.
By supporting EAST we can all make a difference to such children, which is why I am so positive about this game and doing everything I can to raise as much money as possible.
And that's why I was so positive about making this game such a success.
And it certainly was, with an entertaining game, a large crowd, lots of familiar faces and loads of money raised - around £790 on the evening.
And the score? 2-1. Well, the second half was, after Cambridge had put on a scintilating display in the first half, going in at 6-0 at half time. So, the final score was 8-1 and fittingly, the Royston goal was scored by a Jackson , much to the delight of the home crowd, with Simon making his return to football after an enforced 9 year break due to injury. A fitting return on a fanastic evening..
I know may of you have still to give, so please give as generously as you can and remember that by this means of sponsorship EACH gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.
Many thanks to everyone for their incredible support so far.
Regards
Mike
