Dear Everybody,
I'm Mike. That's me on the left. My brother Stewart is on the right. I live in North London. This is hopefully a story of triumph over adversity. I'm a middle-aged guy with two kids. A couple of years ago I was unexpectedly diagnosed with a potentially very serious cancer, CLL - Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia - a nasty shock for a healthy chap in his prime (well, a bit over the hill, but still pretty frisky). Now I've received a new lease of life. Stewart donated bone marrow stem cells, I received a stem cell transplant on the NHS in October, and now I'm on the up-and-up and making a full recovery.
A stem cell bone marrow transplant is a very draining procedure. Seven months on I'm still not quite back to my old self, but my stamina and general fitness is improving every day. Now, mid-2006, I'm starting to go out running again. This page is raising money for the Anthony Nolan Trust, which co-ordinates the UK bone marrow register to make this kind of treatment possible.
This page will close on July 14th. Please give generously.

THE STROUD GREEN ALL STARS
This was a scratch team of 20 friends, neighbours and colleagues who ran with me on May 21st 2006 in the Crouch End 10k - my first long run since treatment in October. They have been the main fund raisers for this web page. I'm immensely proud and excited to have conjured this team up from friends, neighbours, workmates, people from the pub and a few complete strangers. We all made it round and our times ranged from 41 minutes to 1hr 21 minutes. Here are the participants and results in full:
Doug Teesdale 41m 27s
Martin Whitfield 47m 07s
Paul Marston 48m 26s

The Anthony Nolan Trust is the UK bone marrow and stem cell registry, which matches patients in need of marrow transplants with potential donors. Although I didn't need to find an unrelated donor because my brother is a 100 per cent match, I know they do fantastic work saving lives, especially among children and ethnic minorities.
Now that I'm on the road to recovery, I want to 'put something back' , and what better 'get well' present could I have than such a fantastic team?

PS: You can read about my stem cell procedure and its aftermath on my blog,
This is it then, and I also wrote an
article for the Sunday Times about my innovative NHS treatment in a London hotel.
