HMS ALLIANCE, a WW2 era submarine is the memorial to the 5,300 British submariners who have given their lives. Her infrastructure has deteriorated dramatically, a deterioration that has proved hard to stop due to difficulties of access. An urgent programme of restoration is vital. Can you help?

Story

HMS Alliance is the only surviving British WWII era submarine in the world and the memorial to 5,300 British submariners, who gave their lives in service, is undergoing a £6.75m conservation project to save her from severe corrosion and decline. £3.4m was donated by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the remaining funds have been raised through a three year fundraising campaign led by the RoyalNavySubmarineMuseum. Moored on cradles by the Museum quayside since 1982, the outer structure of HMS Alliance had corroded so badly that parts were literally in danger of falling into the sea below, a process that had proved hard to arrest due to difficulties of access.

To help raise funds for the HMS Alliance appeal I will be running two marathons on two continents.  In March I will run in a marathon in Kabul, Afghanistan at the lofty altitude of 5,876 feet not to mention the less than clean air quality. I will then conclude with the London Marathon in April alongside the other HMS Alliance appeal runners.  I am hoping to raise £1,000 for the HMS Alliance appeal so that she can remain as an outstanding memorial and museum, any donation that you could give no matter what value would be greatly appreciated.

HMS Alliance was designed during WWII for service in the Far East and was launched in 1945, as victory was achieved. She then began a distinguished 28 year career during the Cold War until she retired and became the centrepiece of the SubmarineMuseum.  As well as the physical conservation of HMS Alliance, a new education and volunteering programme has been developed. Over a hundred volunteers from the local community are involved to save HMS Alliance through undertaking duties at special fundraising events, helping conserve the submarine and working behind the scenes in the archives
