Story
Friday 19th - Saturday 20th September 2008
The Olympics may have come to a close in China, but not at the Mill! We here at Millroyd Mill in Brighouse are planning to host an event here called the Millympics to coincide with the fourth anniversary of the conversion of the Mill.
The idea behind the event is two pronged. Firstly, it’s a good excuse for everyone to get to know each other and build on the burgeoning community spirit of the Mill. Secondly, after the recent negative publicity we’ve had in the local press, it’s an event that could go a long way to raising the media/public profile and at the same time to raise money for a local charity.
We’ve asked for suggestions of charities at the last residents meeting and around the building. The West Yorkshire Forget-Me-Not Trust came out as they are currently fund raising to build a Children's Hospice for Kirklees, Calderdale and Wakefield.
The main event we are going to do is swim the channel collectively (residents only) in the pool over the weekend - some 2,600 lengths. It's open to everyone to swim as much or as little as they can/want.
There will be other activities taking place from 2pm on the day in the style of a kids sports day, including egg & spoon race; three legged race and sack race, followed by, provisionally, a BBQ.
We're approaching local businesses in Brighouse for sponsorship/donations along with local media - the Brighouse Echo and the Huddersfield Examiner to publicise this event. Please give generously - it's a good cause!
