Banger Rally · 15 August 2012

Centrepoint is the UK’s leading youth homeless charity. Together with our partners, we support over 16,000 16-25 year olds into a home and a job every year. Our award-winning helpline provides support to vulnerable young people across the country. We campaign to end youth homelessness by 2037.

Story

On 26th & 27th October, Alison, Matt, Roman, Scott and Vineet (CTS employees with high travelling ambitions and questionable driving ability) will be driving from London to Milan via Dijon in an old banger (worth less than £500) to raise money for Centrepoint

Centrepoint is the leading charity in the UK supporting homeless young people aged 16–25. It provides a range of accommodation and additional support in health, education and life skills. Their services include a designated health team and mental health team, specialist support to help young people back into education, training or employment, and the teaching of life skills, which encompasses everything from money management to cooking.

To give you an idea of how the money you are raising helps Centrepoint here are some of the things you will be enabling us to do…

£270 gives a homeless young person the basic skills they need to start a college course or get their first job – reading, maths and basic IT. Can you imagine trying to find a job if you can’t read?

£1,200 pays for Centrepoint’s Workwise programme – an intensive course to prepare homeless young people for work it covers CVs, applications, interviews and working life, plus gives young people two weeks work experience. If anyone has read the Evening Standard over the last few weeks you’ll have seen how hard it is to find work for young people – it’s especially hard for young people who’ve only recently found a safe place to live.

£145 means Centrepoint can give a young person training in how to manage their money, how not to get ripped off by dodgy landlords, how to pay bills and keep the lights on – everything they need to know for when they move on out of Centrepoint accommodation.

£100 is the average bursary Centrepoint gives to young people starting college. This means they can buy the books they need to learn from, or the bus pass that gets them there in the morning.

£600 could buy a new computer for a Centrepoint hostel – absolutely vital if young people are going to be able to study successfully and look for jobs. And go on facebook…
