Story
I've just played the viola in public. Yes, that's right - I really have. I've not gone over to the dark side. It was for charity...
Over the past few weeks I've attempted to learn to play (in the loosest possible sense of the word) the viola. This was part of the NYO's fundraising appeal to support our summer course and concerts after one of our major sponsors pulled out.
The NYO is a truly extraordinary organisation. Every year it provides a unique training for 160 of this country's most talented young musicians that encompasses all aspects of musicianship. As a former member I can testify that the benefits of this training stay with you for life even if you don't go on to become a musician.
NYO performances are fresh and vibrant and inspire people all over the country to look again at classical music. If you don't believe me, watch this year's orchestra give their final performance at the Proms on Saturday - BBC 2 at 7pm.
The orchestra receives no direct government funding and relies on the generosity of a wonderful family of donors to support 80% of its running costs. Consequentially the recession has hit us hard and we're currently doing everything we can to sustain this amazing organisation.
This summer the orchestra have joined together and so far we've raised about £65,000 towards our summer programme of activities. Learning the viola and performing in public was my very small contribution. You will be able to see me very soon on youtube if you need celluloid proof.
Having completed my viola hell I would be very grateful if you could join me and support the orchestra and give generously to our appeal...
