Mission Direct is a Christian charity that offers short-term overseas volunteering trips. It takes volunteers from the UK to work on community development projects around the world. Projects include helping to build and decorate school classrooms, low-cost homes and refuges.

Story

This is an update to last years planned trip to the Dominican Republic. As
some of you know, we had to pull out of last years trip, a week before the
due date as I had a serious back problem.
Fortunately, we have able to reschedule for August 2010 and we are to be
joined by Clair ( our eldest daughter) who will have finished university.

The family, Colin, Hilda, Clair, Michelle and Abbie are stepping out of
their comfort zone and have rearranged a trip to the Dominican Republic.
This is no regular holiday, instead it is a chance to join others in
building homes, supporting schools and hospitals and sharing our faith. It
is an opportunity to give something back.

We are going with Mission Direct which supports great locally led projects
among the world's poorest people. They do this by enabling people to join
life-changing trips for two or more weeks.

In the Dominican Republic, Mission Direct is working on a project to provide
housing for families living in slums - often on a rubbish tip. So far they
have helped to build fifty basic houses, and lent a hand as the delighted
families moved in.

Sosua in the Dominican Republic is home to former hired hands from the sugar
plantations - many have come across the border from Haiti (who suffered from
earthquake and floods earlier this year). Thousands of people live in
unsanitary conditions, in shacks made of sticks and rubble on less than £1 a
day. The charity The Samaritan Foundation has been building whole villages
for the slum-dwellers of Sosua.
Mission Direct has been partnering with The Samaritan Foundation on the
current building project since 2006, and has assisted with the building of
houses in the new village of Esperanza, including mixing cement, laying
blocks, plastering and decorating. Volunteers often give new occupants items
such as mattresses and bedding.

You can make a difference. 100% of money raised through this page goes
directly to the local projects. We thank all those that contributed last
year but appreciate that a number of people may still like to make a
contibution to the trip.

Please support and pray for us for what we believe will be a life enhancing
experience.

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It's also the
most efficient way to sponsor us: Mission Direct gets your money faster and,
if you're a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3%
supplement, are added to your donation.
