Mission Green Earth is a UN led initiative of the Art of Living Foundation (AOL) and the International Association for Human Values (IAHV), both are international non-profit organisations with thousands of volunteers in over 150 countries around the world. The scheme is endorsed by the United Nations Environment Programme - 100 million tree campaign.

It calls on individuals, corporates, schools, NGOs, conservation trusts, local institutions and governments to plant /pledge to plant indigenous trees, shrubs and medicinal plants in support of the United Nation's Seventh Millennium Development Goal - Environmental Sustainability.

Mission Green Earth follows on from the record-breaking success of last year's Stand Up and Speak Out initiative - a United Nations campaign that aspired to raise an awareness of the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

In 2007, the campaign broke the Guinness World Record when a staggering 43.7 million people spread over 127 countries stood up within 24 hours to speak out against poverty - the first millennium goal.

This year, rather than just speaking out, AOL and IAHV - which on their own contributed 6.5 million to the UN's Stand Up and Speak Out campaign - have decided to take action and support environmental sustainability - hence the Mission Green Earth campaign.

"It is said that it takes 16 trees to supply the oxygen for one person's life. We each owe the earth 16 trees. Global warming is no longer somebody else's problem. It has not just touched us, but has left deep scars in the forms of natural calamities worldwide such as Tsunami, cyclones, disturbing climatic changes, and polar ice and glacier melts. A very easy and effective way to counter global warming is to plant trees. It is something we can all do, and we hope that the entire country will join us in making Mission Green Earth a success."

About the charity

The International Association for Human Values (IAHV) was founded in Geneva in 1997, to foster, on a global scale, deeper understanding of the values that unite us as a human community. Our aim is to promote an awareness of the importance of human values, encourage their development, and to initiate and support projects in the UK and throughout the world that meet the fundamental objectives of the IAHV organisation in Human Values (and which meet our criteria).
