Story

Monkey Monopoly 2008 is go!

On the 5th and 6th of July this year the roads of Yorkshire trembled to the noise of a herd of Monkeys trying to visit all the places on the Yorkshire edition of the Monopoly board game.

Raising money for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance the cavalcade visited such diverse sites as Leeds Bradford Airport (home of one of the Yorkshire Air Ambulances), newspaper offices, football and cricket grounds, museums, country houses, local businesses, landmarks and of course being Monopoly a jail!   Setting off from Brighouse the course ventured into North, South, East and West Yorkshire covering over 300 miles on fully road legal but decidedly small motorbikes travelling in a convoy with navigational and mechanical support.

We rode through rain, hail and standing water to complete the course over the 2 days and nearly all of the planned stops on the route.  Despite one of us trying to taste tarmac, several breakdowns and the bikes getting lost when we allowed them off without the navigation car everyone returned to Brighouse safely, satisfied a good job had been done and soaking wet!  Now we have dried out we look back and realise just how attached we got to those little motorcycles, in fact 2 of the riders bought theirs on the spot at the end of the ride and 3 of them rode them home!

Thank you to all the organisations and individuals who have got involved including:

  • Easy Rider for the bikes/support van
  • BLD for the second support van
  • CCL and Copart for the support cars
  • Meditek, Fletchers Solicitors and BLD for taking part
  • Low Tide Studios and Dragon Embroidery and Print for the Day Glo bibs

Thank you also to everyone who has donated especially those who have done so online, you can still make a donation as this page will stay active for the remainder of this year.

Next year we are planning to ride around the movie locations in including those used in The Full Monty, Kes, Railway Children, Harry Potter, Dracula, Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, Little Voice and Calendar Girls.  Let me know if you would like to take part!

Thank you for choosing to support Yorkshire Air Ambulance (YAA). As a charity YAA relies on the generosity of individuals & organisations to help save lives across Yorkshire. To keep both of Yorkshire’s air ambulances in the air we need to raise £19,000 per day. Thank you from the team YAA.
