UNIQUE (Rare Chromosome Disorder Support Group)

Unique provides information and support to individuals affected by rare chromosome disorders, their families and the medical and other professionals working with them. Rare chromosome disorders are lifelong conditions, often causing severe physical and learning disabilities and complex health issues. They affect at least 1 in 200 live-born babies. Most will be dependent on their carers for the duration of their lives, many unable to walk, feed themselves or communicate their needs. The disorders remain very poorly understood and Unique is a place for parents and carers to turn to for help and advice. We help them come to terms with their child’s diagnosis by providing information on hundreds of specific disorders, sensitive support through our Listening Ear service and by linking them with other families living with similar disorders. We also work to raise awareness and disseminate information among the medical and many other professionals involved, aiming to ensure those affected receive the care and support they need in their own communities.

My story

First of all, thank you so much to all those who had sponsored me for my skydive. It was an incredible experience and I shall never forget it.

Secondly, I hope the money which I have raised goes to families who really need additional support and would like to thank Unique for the opportunity to raise money.

Many of you may not know this, but in order to complete the jump - I had to stick to a strict regime of swimming, running, giving up alcohol and binging on cakes (not really) in order to complete the jump as I was over the weight threshold.

The jump itself was incredible, almost unexplainable... and would gladly do it again, and again.... and again.
The staff at the Black Knights Parachute Centre near Lancaster were awesome, their personalities and charisma dulled my nerves, even at 8k ft! At 14k ft we were so high, it wasn't an issue to jump out of the plane and before I knew what was happening, I was hurtling towards Earth.
Overall I felt safe and secure and would recommend their services to anyone.

Again, my thanks to everyone and if you are yet skydive - do it before it is too late! It's EPIC!
