The Welsh Guards have recently returned from a successful tour of Helmand Province in Afghanistan. Throughout the summer they relentlessly took the fight to the Taliban and conducted over 3242 combat patrols and sustained no less than 1463 attacks from the enemy. These successes were not without some considerable cost including the deaths of 7 soldiers, including the Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Rupert Thorneloe, the highest ranking officer killed in action since the Falkland’s War. In addition, a considerable number of soldiers have been in hospital and are now in rehabilitation centres. Furthermore, we must expect that more will, in the longer term, be mentally invalided by their experiences. The next 10 years promise to make extraordinary demands on the Regiment, serving Welsh Guardsmen, their partners and families and those members of the Regiment who have left through disability or work-related illness. The Welsh Guards Afghanistan Appeal is designed to support, alleviate and improve the prospects of those consequently in need. •Support the families and dependants of those killed in action by responding promptly to problems of bereavement and hardship. •Support those wounded on operations, particularly those who have had to leave the Army, to assist in finding them new employment and to help them become active family and community members. •Support the families and dependants of those seriously wounded or injured in prolonged recovery situations.

Story

Andrew is running the Edinburgh 10k in October this year - for fun! So we'd like to see if we can raise a little bit of money for the Welsh Guards Appeal as well. Initially Pauline was meant to be doing 3 x 5k runs but has injured her knee so is unable to sadly. We don't want to let the charity down, so please donate anything you can! Thank you :)

Andrew is an RAF SAR pilot who likes to run in his spare time. He understands the importance of forces charities and the work that they do in the support of the injured and the help and guidance they offer to the families of those KIA. We would just like to do 'our bit' to help out. Even if you can spare £1 it would be appreciated!

The Welsh Guards Afghanistan Appeal 2012

Who are they? The Appeal was established to raise much needed finds to help support those returning servicemen who were critically injured by the savages of war. It also provides much needed care and support to the families of those servicemen who were killed in action. The provide a range of care which includes assistance to those too injured to remain in the Army, support with rehabilitation programmes and the provision of ongoing medical and psychological treatment for those returning from operations. You can read more about them here - http://www.welshguardsappeal.com

We chose this charity as Pauline's brother is a L/Cpl in the Welsh Guards and is currently deployed to Afghanistan along with the other men of his Battalion on Op Herrick 16. We wish them a safe deployment and look forward to their return.
