Blackpool Memory Walk · 8 October 2017 ·
In 2005 my Grandma (Audrey) was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Unfortunately for the past 5 years she has been bed bound and deteriorated significantly. My Grandad, who is 81, has always fought tooth and nail for his wife to remain at home with him - and I am so proud to say that he has been able to keep it this way. He truly has been fanstastic looking after her and assuring she's happy (with help from family and friends - in particular my mum, auntie and uncle who have been amazing, and support from 2 carers x 4 times a day). This diagnosis hit our family extremely hard, and this journey has been emotional to say the least. My grandma was the life and soul of the party - throwing her shoes away on the dance floor so she was able to carry on until the early hours. She would help anyone in need, showing her true kindness and caring personality. It's hard to explain how much you can miss/mourn someone who is still 'physically' here.
We would like to do this walk, not only for my Grandma and in memory of the Audrey we remember - a true beautiful spirit, but also to help raise funds that go direct to the Alzheimer's Society.
Around 225,000 people develop dementia every year – that's the equivalent to one person every three minutes. This September and October Memory Walks will be taking place across England, Wales and Northern Ireland to raise money for a world without dementia.
Once you donate, Just Giving will send your money directly to the Alzheimer's Society. So it's the most efficient way to raise money – saving time and cutting costs for the charity. Please dig deep and help us walk for a world without dementia.
