Story

Just a short explanation as to why I am raising money for brain tumour research. Just before Christmas 2009 our family was given news that nobody wants to hear, our 9 year old grandaughter had a brain stem tumour that was inoperable and she was given 3 months to live. She battled on past that time but finally passed away in July 2010. During this time she remained a cheerful happy girl and always had a smile on her face. My son and his wife have raised over £20,000 for charities that helped them during this time. My contribution is to ride a 1952 AJS motocycle from Jon o Groats to Lands End with help from the AJS & Matchless owners club and my friends from workshop 14 whos help and support was invaluable at this time.

In 2012 the AJS & Matchless Owners Cub celebrates its diamond jubilee and as part of the celebration the club chairman Rob Swift, and president Roy Bellett, along with club member Geoff Wright are taking on the challenge of a John O’ Groats to Lands End run, The Wrong Way Down.

Prior to the celebration run Geoff Wright had intended to complete the run with club treasurer the late Chris Talbot who was tragically killed in a motor cycling accident last year so it is also in memory of Chris that Geoff takes on the challenge.

All three will be riding twins manufactured in 1952 the year the club was formed with Roy using a 500 Matchless Rob and Geoff on 500 AJ’S. The bikes to be used by Rob and Roy have been thoroughly checked over at our Kettering headquarters and on completion of the event the AJS twin will become one of the prizes in the club annual raffle to be made at the NEC in November. While not confirmed as yet, the Matchless twin will almost certainly be auctioned within the club membership.

Starting from John O’Groats on May 7May, the route will take in as many club sections as possible where local members can ride for as long as they wish with the main group which is due to finish at Lands End on May11.
