What I will be doing:

 -
Having been out and seen exactly how much good this charity is doing in Uganda, I have a strong desire to return and volunteer again. As such I intend to continue fundraising ... watch this space!

Why:

There is an increasing trend towards poverty in Uganda. Many children don't have the opportunities we all had, yet, since 2000, dilapidated classrooms in Bwenda Village have been replaced with new brick structures with concrete floors. Today, 120 AIDS orphans and other deserving infants attend a brightly painted brick-built school with a grassy compound and adventure playground. Rainwater collection tanks have been fitted, safe latrines have been built and another new school for a further 120 kids is nearby in Kyabirwa.

This work is all thanks to an organisation called SoftPower Education. This English-registered charity is presently just over halfway through a five-year plan intent on refurbishing all 20 schools in Budondo Sub Country.

Soft Power Education only spends money directly on its building projects, pre-school staff wages and local builders in Uganda. Without the money the work cannot be started, let alone completed. 99% of the work in the UK is done by unpaid volunteers; so none of your money is wasted on administration costs, impressive offices or cars – it reaches where it matters – the schools of Uganda.

Every...
£20 raised provides 6 tonnes of building sand
£50 a 1,000 litre water catchment tank
£100 will pay three teachers wages at a preschool
£1,000 will refurbish a 2 classroom primary school block.

Please help with anything you can afford!

Details:

I went out to Bujagali for two weeks this May to help in the refurbishment works. Alongside my personal donations, I have giving my manual labour and paying for my travel and accomodation. My employer, 'still waters run deep', has contributed a fortnight's worth of my billable time via a scheme that we are in the process of setting up called My Ten Days': a charity aimed at convincing employers to donate their workforce's time to charitable works.

My original target was £2500. Having exceeded it I am now pushing for £3500! I know that this is ambitious, but am sure its achievable.

In addition to going out to work in Uganda, I have undertaken the Blenheim 7K run on 27th April 2008 (time 40mins 43 secs) to help raise money and awareness for this charity. If there's anything else I can do to influence you to give more, let me know!

Thank you in advance for your kind generousity and I wish you a healthy and prosperous Spring 2008!
