Central Line Walk for National Autistic Society · 24 October 2008

The National Autistic Society is here to transform lives, change attitudes and create a society that works for autistic people. There is still so much to do to increase opportunities, reduce social isolation and build a brighter future for autistic people. With your help, we can make it happen.

Story

Thanks for visiting our fundraising page.

On 22nd November 2008 we attempted the challenge explained below. Battling aching bodies, sore feet and the coldest day of the year so far, the last remaining members of the group managed to make it to Debden after 18 hours and 42 minutes. Although we physically couldn’t complete the trek – falling short of Epping by only 6 miles (!) - everyone of us feels a great sense of achievement, and so we should (!) for it was a fantastic day and a tremendous effort by everyone involved! Well done all!

The link for the photos taken at the stations covered overlayed on Google Map is:

ORIGINAL MESSAGE:

The Challenge: Walking from West Ruislip to Epping via each station on the Central Line; this is the longest line on the London Underground network! And TRAINS ARE THE BEST (I apologise for sounding like a nerd but this line now guarantees Uzair's involvement)

Who's doing it: A group of lazy Londoners (and ex-Londoners) who get out of breath walking around the block (except for the fitness freak that is Shahab!)

So is that why he is doing this as well?: Yes, if one of us cannot complete the walk, Shahab has kindly offered to carry that person on his back to the end of the route. How nice of him.

How long will it take?: It is approximately 46 miles so depending on how big our blisters are, around 18 hours. Please keep this a secret from Asad as I've told him it will only take a couple of hours cos forget about walking for 18 hours, I don’t even think he's ever been awake for that long.

46 miles!!?? Is that right?: Yes it is.

I'm sorry, could you explain that further?: Fine! Within zones 1 and 2, the walking route is more direct however further out than these zones there are not roads that necessarily go from one station to the next which means that the route will not be so direct....We've just realised that Faraz will be navigating us and since he's not very skilled in this area we may have to increase the route by maybe another 10/15 miles.

Why are we doing this?: We are doing this as a sponsored fundraising event to raise money for the National Autistic Society. This cause is very close to our hearts as our neice Maham suffers from Autism and we would like to further the awareness of this condition within the UK. This is something that the National Autistic Society specialise in; please visit their website at
www.nas.org.uk to read up more on their fuction and efforts.

What you have to do now: Donate below and support us with your comments!!! As you can see Suhail is already stressed as you can see from his "airport face" (the face one develops when they are in intense concentration) so some good luck messages will be appreciated!

How can you get involved?: Contact us if you wanna walk with us or if you want to give us some energising refreshments on route; some of you must live somewhere on the Central Line?

Okay, I understand why the goat is there but why is Sana doing it?:
When she is not applying hand cream, Sana is actually quite useful, e.g. she makes good snacks (she calls them butter sandwiches).

And finally, is High School Musical the bestest thing ever......up there at the top of the list with trains?: Yes. It is. It is so great. I love the film. And the songs. It has changed the course of my life. Oh yes. It is so great. I love it. (okay Sehrish, now that I have said this rubbish will you join in now?)

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: National Autistic Society gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.
