Story

Thank you for visiting my Scope fundraising page. The aim is to climb Mont Blac at the end of June. Knowing that getting to the summit will raise good money for a worthy charity means it should be a cinch.....

So on the basis that any contribution of any amount is going to make it that little bit easier to get to the top, please do make a dontation here if you are able.

am covering the event's costs through a combination of my own expense and corporate sponsorship. So I would just like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to those corporate sponsors: Mimecast, PureTech Marketing, Portrayal and Phoenix Business Solutions. Therefore all money raised from donations, including those made here, go directly and in full to Scope.

Scope's focus is on people with cerebal palsy and their aim is that disabled people should achieve equality: a society in which they are as valued and have the same human and civil rights as everyone else.

Last year (2007) I took part in Scope's White Peaks Ski and Board Challenge and then climbed an Alp after just for good measure. The whole event was recorded in realtime using SportsDo: http://www.sportsdo.net/Public/ActivityBlog.aspx?user=nathanhayes , a system I am hoping to use again this year. With the summit last year being 2,000m high, a few people did suggest it was not a 'propper' mountain which is in part why I am now going for the summit of Mont Blanc in 2008. Details of the event can be found here: http://www.tallstories.co.uk/event_details.aspx?EID=75 .

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Scope will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you. All dontations made here go straight, and in full, to Scope as all costs of this event will be covered by my myself or through corporate sponsorship.

By way of background, I've worked with people with Cerebral Palsy for some time now. Before I moved into Legal, I was involved with a charity that helped kids with cerebral palsy. This came about when a local lass was looking for help buying a speech system (similar, although much simpler, to that used by Prof. Stephen Hawkins) that cost £15k. The Chairman of the previous company I worked for, Spandex, decided to help out and gave her the money to buy the machine. When we found out what £15k actually bought we were rather dissapointed. As such he turned to his son and myself, who both worked in his IT team at the time, to see if we could come up with a more reasonably priced solution using standard technology. This we did and as a result he invested £1m of his own money in setting up the Spandex Foundation to provide these systems to whomever needed one. After a few years of working with the charity in my spare time I then moved to OC and what with a new family and the workload at OC, I could no longer really help out. That was over 10 years ago. A few years ago I decided that enough was enough and I wanted to get back into helping out again. Unfortunately the Spandex Foundation had moved onto other things however I came across an advert in a magazine advertising Scope Challenges as a way to raise money for the charity: Hence the reason why I decided to take part in the White Peaks Challenge last year.

Many thanks for your support,

Nathan
