Thanks for taking the time to visit our fundraising page,
Interacting with nature in the underwater world is our passion. The crystal clear waters, unique scenery and diverse marine life of Santorini give us and our guests not only a playground to enjoy this but also our livelihood. Sadly, like everywhere in the ocean world, while we do our best to protect and preserve it for the future generations there are others who intentionally and unintentionally cause this environment's decline.
From Mike's childhood here and his diving career in later years he has noticed the increase in rubbish, particularly plastic, in the sea as tourist numbers have increased, and its certainly a far sadder picture than when Jacques Cousteau visited searching for the lost Atlantis, when fish abounded in the shallows instead of in ice trays in front of restaurants. On a daily basis we are freeing fish and other animals such as turtles caught up in indiscriminately discarded fishing lines and nets, and filling our pockets with the debris of modern life that washes into our dive sites from the popular beaches.
However, on one day every year in conjunction with Project AWARE (PADI's non-profit environmental awareness and education afiliate, please visit www.projectaware.org ) we go all out not just to clean up our own back yard, but to raise some money to help other troubled areas facing the same issues. This money goes towards such projects as researching the decline in coral reefs, building artificial reefs in high-impact areas to take the pressure off existing reefs, establishing protected areas and other, more expensive clean-ups of a larger scale. We run our clean-ups at our own cost, but ask that if you love this ocean playground of ours, or have enjoyed your time diving with us in Santorini, that you consider helping us make a difference by donating a little on this page to go directly to Project AWARE.
Last year we removed 25kg of debris just from the mountain by Kamari beach alone, including lobster pots, car tyres, clothing and 2 large sacks of plastic products. This year we aim to beat that by also cleaning up the reef-top of White Island, where the commercial fisherman have been using our mooring to clean out their nets and throw everything overboard. For anyone who's here and wishes to join us this will be followed by a well-earned beer and picnic on the beach of this deserted island in the caldera :) For more information please visit our website www.navyswaterworld.gr and go to 'contact'. We appreciate your help, both in person and an spirit.
Thank you, the Navys team.
