I have just completed this challenge.  That doesn't mean you have to stop donating!
It wasn't a real swim across the channel - it was the wrong time of year for that.  Instead the challenge was to swim the equivalent distance (35.2 km), in pools, over the course of 10 weeks.
It was a struggle to fit it all in, as the bishop said to the actress.  I didn't start the challenge until some time after the kick-off date; I had a week in the US on business; there was a week and several weekends looking after my lovely children; and I had some minor surgery which took me out of action for two weeks.  That left something like 5 weeks to actually swim in.
Also I have developed a marked chlorine sensitivity, so I can't swim in most pools without developing impossible rhinitis.  Happily I was able to find a local health club with a 25m low-chlorine (ozone-treated) pool.
