Story

Hello,

Thanks for visiting, or re-visiting my just-giving page. On Saturday August 6th 2011 team "Sharks" completed a crossing of the English Channel in 13hrs 35mins.

Our voyage started at 03.50, in Dover Harbour. We were collected by our pilot, Chris, aboard the Seafarer II. Russell Perkins was the lead out swimmer, and did a great job getting us away from the shore in pitch darkness. He was followed by Kate Fryatt, Adrian Hodgson, Colin Palmer, Myself, and then Meg Burn.

I was sick within half an hour of boarding the boat. I don't have sea legs! My nausea stayed with me until I started to swim. My first shift lasted an hour, and took us into the shipping channels of the Dover Strait. The water temperature was around 16-17 degrees. Not too bad at all.

I was sick as soon as I boarded the boat again.

When we were around 5-7 miles from Cap gris nez in France we encountered a tug boat which was pulling an oil rig. It wasn't going to move, and it looked like we might miss our tide, as we had to go down the channel to avoid the vessels. We also encountered a few jellyfish, and a porpoise.

Some gutsy swims by our team members meant that we completed the swim at around 17.25, and Kate deservedly took the last swim and touched French soil near Wissant.

It took 3 hours to get back to Dover harbour, and we went to "The White Horse" to add our humble names to the wonderful honour board which adorns the walls and ceilings of that fine establishment.

It was a wonderful day, and a lifelong ambition was fulfilled.

Thanks for donating.
