Optometry Giving Sight is a global fundraising initiative that specifically targets the prevention of blindness and impaired vision due to uncorrected refractive error – simply the need for an eye exam and a pair of glasses.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

Neil Chatterjee and George Mumford are two Manchester based optometrists and keen cyclists.  Instead of relaxing on the bank holiday weekend, we are joining other optometrists from across the country to cycle the first stage of the tour de France 2014.

This is a 190km (or 120 miles) ride which goes from Leeds to Harrogate.  It doesn't go in a straight line, but instead goes over some of the toughest hills of the Yorkshire Dales like the Buttertubs Pass.  We are doing this to raise money and awareness for optometry giving sight.

This charity aims to eliminate avoidable blindness amongst the 670 million people worldwide who are blind or vision impared simply due to not having access to eye examinations and glasses.  The money raised will help fund sustainable projects which give sight and hope to those in need.

Our training so far has consisted of sitting in cafes, eating home made flapjacks, drinking all Tony's tea and the odd bike ride or two.  As long as we don't run out of tea, cake or jelly babies, we might have a shot at completing the ride in the allotted time of 10 hours.  The more we raise, the fewer the excuses we have not to go through with it.  So please give generously :)

If we complete the ride, we'll have burnt 8000 calories.  That's a lot of cake!
