10 Mile Sponsor Cycle Run round Cumbrae on 15/16th May 2009
Sound of Music fancy dress optional
We are going to cycle round Cumbrae a small island off the west coast of Scotland in fancy dress in memory of our mother Patricia Little to raise money for Hospice at Home
Our Mum was diagnosed with Renal cancer early last year, despite her pain she was determined to go home so we took her home. There are 5 of us Sue, Caroline, Lynda, Geoff and Louise and all four girls are nurses, it is probably because Mum was such a caring, nurturing person that we all chose to enter the caring professions. Thanks to the understanding of our employers and the support we had from each other we nursed Mum at home until she passed away in September. This was not easy for any one of us but we had some great laughs with her as well as some tears and although it was difficult not one of us would change the time we had with her last year. We will never forget the joy on her face when she managed to make it to her 80th birthday party and all her friends and relatives were there as she was wheeled in they stood up and sang happy birthday and for she's an jolly good fellow. Mum had never had a birthday party as a child and she really enjoyed this one even though she was in pain she smiled the whole night. When we returned to the house later that evening she was sitting up in bed laughing and reminiscing with friends and relatives from her home town of Liverpool!
We also had some wonderful support from firstly our brother Geoff who visited almost every day bringing wonderful produce from his new allotment which really made Mum proud and encouraged her to eat, she was especially proud when he brought home made blackcurrant pie which he made himself! Geoff also gave us love and most importantly a hug when we needed it the power of which cannot be underestimated.
Mum had some wonderful friends too who would call in for a chat always bringing a little something, a plant, a tempting treat or some lovely smelly stuff for her wash, the district nurses from the local surgery in Dalston also gave us so much help and support and Mum had so much respect for them.
Looking after Mum day and night was a privilege but some days we needed to get out of the house for a couple of hours to recharge our batteries or to do some shopping, some days we sat by the river and talked about how we were feeling
and sometimes we had a cry. These precious few hours gave us strength to give Mum the love and care she deserved for being the best Mum anyone could have wished for and would not have been possible except for Hospice at Home. The staff who came had such a caring attitude that we felt safe going out for those couple of hours knowing Mum was in such good hands. Mum also had the opportunity to talk to someone who understood about how she was feeling and get support from them. Hospice at Home also organized for Mum to get therapeutic massage which she gained great benefit from, she loved the rose oil which was one of her favorites.
We are doing this sponsored cycle along with family, dear friends and all of Mums 13 grandchildren to raise money for Hospice at Home to say thank you and to help them to continue their wonderful work.
Thank You
