We offer expert care, guidance and support to people living with a terminal illness

Story

Thank you for visiting our page: We are trying to collectively raise enough to fund as many days as possible for Marie Curie's Newcastle Hospice in Elswick and we really need your help.

Almost one year since the world was gripped by the coronavirus, we're still living through the many challenges the pandemic has brought us.

Looking ahead, the need for our services has never been greater. For our hospice, situated in the heart of Newcastle, the impact of the pandemic was immeasurable. Yet throughout, the team have continued to be there offering care and support to people and their families at the end of their lives.

We are so grateful that so many people choose to generously support Marie Curie and our work and that’s why we’re delighted to be working with the Pears Foundation who are generously matching any new Pay for a Day donations for the Newcastle Hospice this year up to 31 December 2021.

For every day we fund, the Pears Foundation will match it – so we’re trying to raise as much as we can to make the most of this wonderful opportunity and to make sure our support is available to everyone who needs us.

The cost of Paying for a Day at our Newcastle Hospice is £8,587 and every donation towards that target makes a huge difference to people who desperately need our support.

  • £390 pays for a hospice bed for a day at our Newcastle Hospice
  • £180 pays for a whole night of care from a Marie Curie Nurse
  • £32 pays for a call to our Support Line, meaning someone in need can pick up the phone and receive practical information and emotional support
  • £25 pays for a bereavement counsellor (for an hour) to listen, soothe and support someone who’s grieving
  • £20 pays for an hour of expert care and emotional support from a Marie Curie nurse for someone living with a terminal illness in the comfort of their own home
  • £2 will give a patient their favorite tipple in the hospice each night

Every day, our dedicated hospice team provide care and support to people living with any terminal illness and their loved ones. Our inpatient unit provides the reassurance of around the clock expert care, and a comfortable and safe environment for people to either access respite care or to choose to spend their final days with us. Our outpatient service provides support for people to access specialist clinics and support services, including illness specific clinics and support for carers.

The coronavirus pandemic has had a huge impact, with our team adapting and changing at pace to ensure people can still access the support they crucially need.

  • Our inpatient unit has remained open throughout the pandemic, with staff wearing vital personal protective equipment in order to keep patients safe.
  • Our outpatient appointments have either been done virtually or over the phone and when needed face to face.

Technology has become a greater part of our everyday lives, with the team also looking at the different ways technology can improve patient experience.

Whatever you can do to support our Pay For A Day Campaign would be gratefully received.
