Thanks for taking the time to visit the Cerebral Palsy Research Fund's JustGiving page.
The CP Research Fund was founded in 2004 to fund research into cures for cerebral palsy after my son, Colin, was left permanently brain damaged due to medical negligence at his birth. The first fundraising event held was a Guy Fawkes Ball which raised over £4,500. Other successful fundraising events followed, including, a Stars in Your Eyes evening, a Back to the 80's Night and a Charity Football Match. Now I have persuaded some brave volunteers to throw themselves off the Tyne Bridge in the name of charity. Please dig deep and sponsor them in their zip slide challenge.
Huge progress has been made since I started fundraising in 2004. Scientists have discovered that stem cells help injured brain cells recover and replace brain cells that have died. There are currently clinical trials happening in America where children aged between 2-12 are being treated with stem cells stored from their own umbilical cord blood. Previous studies have shown a marked improvement in children with cerebral palsy three months after initial treatment. The results, when known, could prove ground breaking in advancing the treatment of cerebral palsy and hopefully be of benefit to Colin, my son, who has the condition.
