Hello everybody,

Welcome to this, my Just Giving page. Imagine this as a giant virtual wallet that needs to be filled with real cash money for my chosen charity Book Aid International before I embark on the heroic task that is the New York Marathon on November 6, 2011.I've done one Marathon, and it's far, really, really, excruciatingly far.  It hurts. A lot. Like stubbing your toe or having a cricket ball hit you in your special man place, but for five hours. If you have reached this page, you have probably already been convinced to donate. But just in case...

Why should you donate to my chosen charity Book Aid International?

Book Aid International's answer is, "Because books change lives." And I couldn't agree more. They've changed mine. I love books. Love 'em. More than red wine, espresso, red meat and reading the FT Weekend. And so do the people in sub Saharan Africa who have benefitted from the more than 25 million books supplied by Book Aid International since Lady Hermione Ranfurly – a lovely lady by all accounts – set the charity up in 1954.

What will you will receive in return?

That feeling of gargantuan wellbeing that comes from having provided people with books. Ask anyone who ever gave me a book as a present – it's one of the few times you'll get a proper smile out of me. And because this is a cause closer to my heart than my right lung, I promise to run this, my second marathon, in 4hrs or less. OK, definitely 4 hrs and 15 minutes, or less. Scout's honour. Ok, I was never a Scout. Cub's honour. Dib-dib, dob-dob, and another dib just to make sure.

In advance, because I know you're the best of people, thank you.

On your maks, get set, MONEY!
