Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit Nic's JustGiving page.

Nic Van Gelder - SPANA's Fundraising and Supporter Care Administrator and volunteer Met police officer - knows no fear. This year he's doing it for the donkeys and other working animals! On Sunday 21st April 2013 the special constable for Haringey borough strapped on the 17kg (35lb) SPANA donkey mascot costume and trudged the full 26.2 mile Virgin London Marathon course! Humbly following in the footsteps of SPANA chief executive Jeremy Hulme, veterinary director Dr. Andy Stringer and other brave souls this was a truly worthy mission.

Completing the marathon this way is a very graphic reminder of the enormous burdens that working animals have to carry every day of their lives and the distances they have to carry them. It’s true that many donkeys and mules have to complete a marathon every day of their working lives - Nic did it just once.
