Story
WHAT ARE WE ATTEMPTING?
One day at work, with too much time on my hands, I stupidly discovered that a Guinness world record existed for the longest continuous game of cricket, and thought "we could do that". The official record stands at 35 hours, although there are unratified attempts of 50 and 55 hours from teams in Australia and New Zealand, respectively.
The team I play for - Blunham CC, in Bedfordshire, will attempt to break all three of these, and are aiming for 59 hours of continuous play, in an an effort to ensure the record stays within the country that introduced cricket to the world, and also for all those people out there that continually punch above their weight.
On Friday the 19th September at 9am, myself and twenty three other stupid cricketers will attempt to play right through until Sunday evening, and will have to carry on through the darkness, rain, snow, sleet and anything else thrown at us.
On top of all of this I will probably have to listen to my best mate Sid moaning the whole time about the cold, his knee, his hernia, his hunger pains, and why we aren't we out in town drinking and chasing women instead.
WHY?
Our club are fundraising to update our pavilion and facilities which are stuck in a 1960's time warp and are totally inadequate. With 100 colts playing for us, and as a coach for them, I am doing this for their future We aim to raise £40,000 to refurbish and extend the existing pavilion, plus a further £34,000 for nets.
As anyone knows at the moment, the Olympics in 2012 have stuffed anyone like us trying to get money from the usual sources, and unless our ground - Phoenix Gardens, is plucked from obscurity to become a venue for Archery instead of Lords, we will have to raise the money ourselves somehow.
WHY SPONSOR ME?
For those that know me, cricket is my whole life. I have a hole in a heart valve, and am usually in bed most nights by ten, so this will be a great challenge for me. We are not allowed to leave the ground at any point, so for those 59 hours I will not only have to play cricket, but exist on a diet of red bull, espresso's, bananas and pot noodles.
So please sponsor me now!
