Nick Jarram

19th March 1982 - 14th March 2009

Both on the inside and on the outside Nick was a unique and beautiful person. He had a vivacious love for life that was simultaneously infectious and charming. This manifested itself in his love of the finer things in life: artwork, photography, beer, wine, gadgets, hair, music, 'debates', and sometimes-questionable t-shirts. He always seemed to take such joy from enfolding these things into his life and although they might be what we will remember about him, they are not why we will remember him. He was an extremely talented photographer and yet this talent was eclipsed by the gift of warmth that his friendship and presence brought into our lives. He loved his family, his friends and his girlfriend Nikki, and we all, in turn, loved him.

Nick was unique. Unfortunately his death was not. Despite being only 26, Nick died suddenly of an undiagnosed heart condition. Relatively little is known about Sudden Cardiac Death, but what is known is that it occurs in fit and healthy young people and has few or no warning signs. The latest figures suggest that 12 people a week may die from the condition. That's approximately 625 fit and healthy young people each year, the majority of which could have been preventable deaths. A simple ECG screening test would have highlighted a problem and enabled these young people to get the preventative medical help required to allow them to live the long and happy lives they should have had.

The charity CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) runs a screening program, produces literature aimed at raising awareness of the condition, prodvides financial and technical support for vital research, and runs a bereavement program. For more information please visit www.c-r-y.org.uk. Please  help by donating to CRY so they can carry out their vital work, so we can prevent this happening to other young people and their families.

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Cardiac Risk in the Young gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

Thank you for your support.
