As some of you are aware I have been getting a bit excited about taking the shiny red bike over to France for a spin on July 6 - I figured that, with it likely to be torture, I may as well raise money for a charity that can then rehabilitate me the other end, following the red wine and roquefort binge that will inevitably follow the Etape.

In all seriousness however, they are unlikely to spend any money on me and so all donated funds will go to those in need - even Jai, should he be waterboarded, may get some help.

It would be great to have you sponsor me - even though I like to ride, this has required a lot of training and will be painful on the day; here is a selection of quotes from riders who completed the Etape in 2007 as a guide to how tough it may be:

"I passed lots of riders who had cracked - more vomiting, lying by the roadside than on the previous climb even, the ambulances seemed to be doing more work too."

"I established a rhythm of riding seated in my easiest gear for a few kilometres, standing up in the pedals for a few kilometres, and then walking a hundred yards. Everyone was doing it. We were no longer cyclists, but refugees"

Granted, one of those quotes was probably from a chick and another from a southerner, but i'll probably break into a sweat. Maybe.
