Helen & Douglas House helps local families cope with the challenges of looking after a terminally ill baby or child who will die prematurely. We are a home from home for our patients and their families, and provide round-the-clock care in a warm, loving environment.

Story

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page, and considering sponsoring me - your support is hugely appreciated.  I’m now back from my trip and it's hard to believe that just a few weeks ago I was on the other side of the world having this photo taken.

On 12th October we reached Everest base camp after hiking for 7 days and the following morning 6 out of 14 of us got to the summit of Kalapatthar (nearly a kilometre higher than Mont Blanc) having set off at 5am in freezing conditions. The clouds were swirling around Everest, but by the time I reached the top of Kalapatthar they had luckily cleared enough to enable me to get a fabulous view of the whole mountain.

The trek was full of challenges to do with altitude, fitness, weather, terrain and extremely basic facilities – at the highest point we were getting 50% less oxygen than normal, so climbing Kalapatthar was hard work, as was walking between 8-11 hours every day.  Having said that, it was an extraordinary experience, and fantastic to be able to raise so much money for a great cause

I did the challenge on behalf of Helen & Douglas House, a charity that provides respite and end of life care for children and young adults, as well as support for their families. I have been working as a  volunteer at Helen & Douglas House for the past 1-2 years. It is a very warm and friendly place, and having met a number of parents whose children have received respite or end of life care there, I know how invaluable they find the support they are given.

I am very keen to raise as much money as possible for the charity, as well as completing the challenge and would greatly appreciate your help. I have paid all costs associated with the trip, so all money given will go directly to the charity. Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Helen & Douglas House will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

Many thanks for your support.
