Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Please note... VANL will hold the money until all is collected and then transfer the funds to British Heart Foundation and the Tony Forster Challenge. ALL money raised will go directly to these organisations. This is a service they offer for local fundraisers!!!

Now here's my story...

I didn’t have the confidence to join community activities and groups, but the children’s home I lived in set up a cycling club for looked after children and young people who had left care. We met up a couple of times a week and I really enjoyed it. We talked about setting ourselves a challenge such as cycling Coast to Coast, tragically one of our group, Tony Forster a Children’s Home Manager died. This made us all want to do the Coast to Coast in Tony’s memory and raise funds for The British Heart Foundation. Following successfully completing the Coast to Coast last September I felt I had really achieved something and wanted to do something else to encourage other looked after children and young people who had left care to set goals and enjoy and achieve success, as my experience had given me a personal sense of achievement.

I have set my next goal as Cycling End to End; Land’s End to John O’Groats, There will be a wide range of other young people involved in the challenge. They will either: take part by cycling some part of the route, take part in the weekly cycle club or be involved in the organisation of the challenge and fundraising. Every child in care and leaving care will have the opportunity to be involved at some point.

Funding of the project has been a mixture of donations from local business, fundraising events and bids to Humberside Youth Association Grant Fund, Baron Davenports Charity, Lindsey Oil refinery, Barton Lions, ABP Ports, CRIG

To date a cycle has been purchased, deposit paid for motor home, three turbo trainers purchased. Further proposed expenditure will be motor home hire, diesel, provisions, cycling gear and maintenance for bikes.

All funds remaining will stay in the Tony Forster Challenge Account with Carlton Education for future projects for looked after and leaving care young people.

Regular weekly training sessions have been taking place throughout the winter, supported by children’s home staff, young people from 16+ service and colleagues from children in care service, Nicole successfully completed 100K Sportif event organised by Lincsquad Cycling club. Members of the children’s home cycling club attended spinning classes again organised by Lincsquad during the winter months. Nicole has made use of her Off peak free pass to leisure services donated by Corporate Parents Leisure Services. Sportivate in partnership with Lincsquad were successful in their bid to include additional funding for 6 sessions with a qualified coach for looked after children involved in the cycling challenge.
