Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.  Thanks to everyone - we made it - the etape and the target.  The etape was reportedly one of the toughest in years but we all got round in the 90 deg heat helped by lots of TdF fans throwing ice cold water of us as we went up the Tourmalet.  It was a fantastic experience made perfect by the really generous donations made by everyone.  Thanks from all of us.

Two years ago I was diagnosed with bowel cancer, the disease that had killed my mother.  Thanks to the fantastic care I had from the NHS, family and friends, I've made a full recovery.  During chemo my wife Lindsey made the mistake of first buying me the Lance Armstrong books and then a giving me a bike - I am now a sad nerdy cyclist riding a couple of hundred miles a week trying to regain sight of my knees!

Steve, Aled, David and I have been training together for several months now and they have kindly agreed to help raise money for Lynns Bowel Cancer campaign, which does a fantastic job in raising awareness of this wholly preventable disease - I've even had my two sisters and brother get colonoscopies - lovely - they were all clear.  I would like to raise money to help spread the word and build awareness.

The Etape is the Pyrenean mountain stage of the Tour de France taking place on July 18.  It is 178km long and takes three of the most famous climbs, each of which is over 20km long.  It is gruelling.  Not all the 9,000 who start finish.  We need to finish as there are 4 cold beers waiting for us.

As an add on, I've won a place on James Cracknell's Deloittes Ride Across Britain from John O Groats to Lands End starting on 12 June - I'll be wearing a bowel cancer cycling shirt and hopefully getting some more publicity along the way! Update - its now 20 June and I've finished - it was magnificent, 1016 miles of pure joy - honest.
