COCO’s purpose is to provide education to create the opportunity for children to break the cycle of poverty. We are currently working with communities in remote areas of Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. Our vision is a world where every child, everywhere has access to quality education.

Story

Nkwawangya is a village with approximately 300 families and is located on the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro (Tanzania). Nearly all households are subsistence farmers with small plots and aspiration for owning a cow and goats. Surplus is small but after feeding the family, maize and milk are sold to finance education and health care.

Nkwawangya is a strong community which has the will to help itself. It has a community association with committed individuals but they need external support to achieve their aims. A number of interrelated projects are under way.

Health and Education are currently the main focus and you can discover more about this wonderful project by visiting the Nkwawangya Community Develpment website.

Nkwawangya's strength is its strong sense of community - the responsibilities that residents share, their good relationships and community leaders who have a vision for a better educated and healthier population who can bring about greater financial security and strong community cohesion. There is a vibrant community association which is involved in all aspects of village life.

What the community needs:

  • The School urgently needs funding to access poor children to educational opportunities – money for educational materials and fees for secondary schooling.
  • The Community Health Project (Tumaini Nkwawangya Health Project) established in 2008 needs sustainable funding for it to have a real impact on the community's health.
  • The Women's Group needs resources for its workshop to develop a sewing and cooking business to create employment, training opportunities for young women and to generate income to sustain community activities.
  • The Joinery Workshop needs more tools.
  • The Nkwawangya Community Association and its leaders need to access to training for community development, project management and ICT – all the things we tend to take for granted in our highly developed and well funded civil society.

Please dig deep to assist the community of Nkwawangya to achieve all that they aspire to achieve!
Thank you.
