Lance Corporal Martyn Compton of The Life Guards, aged 24, received 70% burns when a roadside bomb blew up his armoured vehicle in southern Afghanistan August 2006. He 'died' as his heart stopped three times; and had to be resuscitated on the way to hospital, as well as losing his ears and nose in this incident. His soldier colleagues were outraged when he was awarded only £100,000 compensation in August 2007. Reconstruction of his face has already begun, but he still faces more plastic surgery to rebuild his nose and ears. At the time of Martyns injury Paul was the only medic on the ground who treated and kept him alive until his evacuation to a military hospital. Having seen the extent of Martyns injuries at the point of wounding and on return to England, Paul has decided to compete in two events, one being a Mountain Bike endurance event this coming August called Trans-Wales. This consists of 350 Mile and over 50,000ft of climbing in 7 days. The second event is a half marathon in New York, which Paul will be running and I will be walking. This is all to raise funds to help Martyn and others lead a more comfortable life. The Household Cavalry Regiment, set up the Operational Casualties fund in 2006 the proceeds will go to soldiers and their families who have been injured during a tour of Afghanistan/Iraq.
