Story
Thanks for visiting my fundraising page; anything you donate will be massively appreciated...
In July 2014 myself and Laurence will be embarking on a 220 mile, unsupported trek in northern Norway, 400 kilometres inside the arctic circle. Over a ten day period, we’ll be crossing one of the most inhospitable regions in Europe, with the aim of raising £20,000 for a charity called Hope in Tottenham.
Hope in Tottenham seeks to provide opportunities, experiences and life chances to children and young people in Tottenham, thus helping them reach their full potential.
How Your Money Will Be Spent
1. Summer Activities 2014
A number of activities are being planned for the summer, including:
· An inter-estate football tournament
· Kayaking (for groups of teenagers and for younger children and their parents)
· Horse Riding
· Paintball
· Table Tennis Tournament
· Community BBQs
These activities will impact hundreds of families, with a particular emphasis on families who are struggling financially. Moreover, the community links that ‘Hope in Tottenham’ generates from these events will enable the charity to support more families in the future.
Cost £5,500
2. Equipment for Youth Groups
Hope in Tottenham’s activities for youth and children require equipment, which from time to time needs replacing and upgrading. For example:
· Footballs, goals, bibs, cones
· Art materials
· Table tennis bats and balls
· Basket balls
· Board games
· Camping equipment
· Other sports equipment
· X-Bus provision 2014/15 (£2,000)
Cost £4,000
3. Youth Workers
Hope in Tottenham doesn’t believe in raising large sums of money to bring ‘specialists’ in from outside, rather the emphasis is on Tottenham addressing it's own needs. To that end, Hope in Tottenham is increasingly identifying young people from the local area who have the potential to engage in youth work and who will be paid on a pro rata basis. The hope is to raise enough funds to pay five such candidates for 2-4 hours per week, for a two year period.
Cost £10,000
Grand Total = £19,500
What Hope in Tottenham does:
1. Schools Counselling Project: Currently there are 18 professional counsellors, working in 25 schools, for a total of 29 days per week across the Borough of Haringey, providing invaluable support to some of the most troubled children in the area.
2. Diversionary Youth Work: Youth groups are running across five estates in Tottenham, including the Broadwater Farm Estate, engaging hundreds of young people in a variety of ways, including: Football Coaching, Arts and Carnival Workshops, Youth Clubs, and the X-Bus (a mobile youth club). For the past three years, groups of teenagers have been given the opportunity to go on outward bound style holidays to the Lake District and Cornwall.
3. Give Tottenham a Change (GTAC): Working closely with the College of Enfield, Haringey and North East London, GTAC recruits, trains and links volunteer mentors with young people who are struggling to find work.
