Celebrating
England's win on wednesday / or focusing on something positive after we
get dumped out of the competition early, I'm hoping to tackle the Lyke
Wake Walk challange (west to east) in the next couple of weeks.
For
those that dont know, The "Lyke Wake Walk" is a 40 odd mile trek over
the North Yorkshire Moors national park, from Osmotherley (nr
Northallerton) to the coast (Ravenscar). The challange states this must
be completed within 24 hours. Weather permitting, I will start straight
after Saturdays 7:30pm kickoff (which will be Englands next game, should
we win our group), aiming to finish, and be back home for 3pm on sunday
(Englands game should they finish runners up).
If it doesnt work
out this weekend, then Sunday 4th July is free, however Saturday 24th
June is more appealing (full moon, and closer to the solstice). I'll
confirm more details shortly.
Many of us take the
availability of drinking water
for granted, but yet 884 million people in the world do
not have access to safe water. This is roughly one in eight
of the world's population. 2.5 billion people in the
world do not have access to adequate sanitation, this is almost two
fifths of the world's population.
1.4 million
children die every year from diarrhoea caused by unclean water
and poor sanitation - 4,000 child deaths a day or one child
every 20 seconds. This equates to 160 infant school
classrooms lost every single day to an entirely preventable
public health crisis.
It's heartbreaking to read these
statistics, to know all these lives are being cut short by something so
straight forward as clean water. So while someone's upset at losing a
job, whilst another's annoyed at the way their country is being governed
let's spare a thought for those who have to deal with a harsh reality
that no-one else could ever handle.
You can make a difference.
WaterAid is an international non-profit organisation dedicated to
helping people escape the poverty and disease caused by living without
safe water and sanitation. By donating to WaterAid you can help poor
communities establish sustainable water supplies and latrines, close to
home.
