Story

About Nyumba Ya Thanzi:

We have a shared belief in the principle that the people whose projects we support should be free to put their own ideas into action. During our visits to Malawi we have met many people with impressive dreams and ambitions who understand their own circumstances and have ideas about how to help people in their community; the only thing holding them back is the opportunity to put those ideas into practice. We volunteer for Nyumba because of our desire to give those people the opportunity to turn their ideas into a reality and through that to help and inspire others.

Current Project:

Senga Bay, Salima Malawi
Centre for Children with HIV

The Nyumba Ya Thanzi Nutrition Centre in Senga Bay is a project designed and run by Richard Moyo. Richard found out that he was HIV positive in 2006 and decided to set up a project to help other people in his community living with HIV and to combat stigma.

Richard and a team of local builders built the Centre and it opened its doors in February 2008. The Centre now assists 35 HIV positive children ensuring they have highly nutritious food, access to medical attention and emotional support. They also have a woman's group and do home visits. Richard works with a nutrition advisor, woman's coordinator, teacher, 2 cooks and a watchman at the centre. They have developed links with local health care providers and HIV support organisations who work with the Centre to provide training, community outreach and voluntary testing and counselling and medical services.

Richard and his team have done an impressive job of gaining the trust of people in their community, many of whom are incredibly scared of revealing their, or their children's, HIV status or seeking help.

Richard and the other staff at the centre are passionate and committed to their project. It is incredibly motivating for them to see the positive impact of the work they do on the lives of people in their community.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure.
