Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I am taking on a number of challenges this year to raise money for a Cambodian charity called Safe Haven.
To help raise money I am doing the following:
1. A 2 hour spin class on 30th April at Boom Cycle with my only food that day being plumpy nut (*see below for info)
2. Riding La Marmotte (174km & 5000m of climbing) cycle race and the next day the Grimpee de L'Alpe race (13km & 1100m climb/race up the Alpe D'Huez mountain). Both are early July 2013 and hailed as the toughest cycle event around
3. Riding RideLondon-Surrey 100 classic in August (160 km loop around Surrey hills)
4. Riding the Hell of Hexham (my home town) in September (160 km & 3,500m of climbing)
In total the above equates to almost 25 hours of riding, over 500km and 10,000m of climbing (1,200m more than Mount Everest). If you would like to support me and help raise some money for Safe Haven
I first came across the charity while in Cambodia a few months ago and was serious impressed by the work they are doing to help the huge number of deprived children in Cambodia. Cambodia suffered severe genocide in an atrocious reign of the Khmer Rouge and today the young generation are suffering with very high illiteracy rates, 30% of the population living in poverty and growing child trafficking issues. Safe Haven are trying to stop this by giving orphans a home and an education - things the developed world take for granted. They also encourage entrepreneurial spirit and I was amazed by the resourcefulness of the children for example making jewellery from melting down bombs and shells from the wars.
*Plumpy nut - it is a peanut-based paste for the treatment of severe malnutrition and is heavily used in the developing world to remove the need for hospitalisation. It apparently tastes 'surprisingly good' and is 500 calories per packet. If I hit my target I will donate additional money directly to the Plumpy nut organisation.
