Hello and thanks for visiting Sarah's and my fundraising page for OCD-UK. Sarah and I know only too well the agonising suffering of a very close and beloved member of our family who has severe OCD. The stomach churning worry and wits' end frustration of watching their relentless strugge with this debilitating condition is hard to bear. The OCD and subsequent depression robs the family of normal joyful interaction. OCD affects 2-3% of our society but because of the shame that the sufferers feel, they are often reluctant to seek help. Apart from the more known-about hygiene and checking issues which can stymie normal life often chaining sufferers to their homes, people can also suffer from 'Pure O' which involves ruminating on intrusive thoughts which can be horrific and really nasty, entrapping them within their minds and rendering them incapable of functioning - which is what we have experienced. Indeed, OCD is listed by the World Health Organisation as being in the top 10 of the most deblitating illnesses in terms of impairment of quality of life and loss of income. OCD-UK has been unwaivering in its help and support to me and my family, continually offering hope and encouragement at the bleakest of times when we just couldn't see any light. OCD-UK's goal is to alleviate the symptoms of this awful and incapacitating condition by offering sound advice on the best treatments and therapies available and to show sufferers that they are not alone. Their fundamental aim is to lobby for and promote free, equal and early treatment for OCD and also to raise awareness in the public arena to eliminate the shame sufferers feel by educating society and explaining the symptoms in order to bring greater understanding, sympathy and support across the board. Sufferers often think that society would label them freaks because of the sheer horror of what's going on in their minds which in turn can drive them to agoraphobia and even suicide. No wonder they are reluctant to seek help - OCD is often referred to as 'the secret epidemic'. Yet treament can be relatively simple and quick.
