Chris Jones In October well-known local former non-league footballer Chris Jones sadly died at the premature age of 56. Chris was diagnosed with prostate cancer over 6 years ago and faced his illness with courage and fortitude. In the final few difficult months he was looked after by the Compton Hospice in his home town of Wolverhampton who did a magnificent job of caring for Chris to minimise his suffering. He was a lovely man with a wonderful family and engaging nature who was well liked by everyone who knew him and his death touched us all deeply. At his funeral and subsequent memorial football match at Stourbridge there was a general feeling that something should be done in his memory to benefit charity. I want to help and think I can. I played with Chris in the mid-eighties at Kidderminster Harriers and stuck up a close and enduring friendship with him. As a keen recreational runner I have been trying for many years to be accepted into the London Marathon and have finally succeeded for this year’s race in April. I have named the prostate cancer charity as my nominated charity to honour Chris’s memory. I am sure that many of the people who came into contact with Chris through football, work or socially would want to support this worthy cause.
