Story

Thanks for visiting my fundraising page.

Jill and I completed our off road mountain bike ride on the 3rd of July 09.  It was a real challenge and some days were harder than others.  We met lovely people on the way and some were kind enough to make donations to our cause.

We have kept our blog updated.  www.offroadjogle.blogspot.com

My dear Mother Patsy was so much more than my Mother, she was my trusted  friend and confidante. She had a zest for life and fun that was an inspiration to all who met her.  She was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was 42 years old in 1985.  She battled bravely for five years but in August of 1990 she died after the cancer had become more aggressive and spread to her bones.  I am so very lucky to have had such a special relationship with my Mother and she is always in the forefront of my thoughts even though so much time has passed. I miss her very much and I know my Brother and Step Father miss her too.

During the time she was ill I witnessed nurses at work under tremendous pressure, but they still treated my Mum with real care and empathy.  I also became aware of Macmillan Cancer Support and all the assistance they can offer. Once my Mum was gone I felt so strongly that I should do something to help others who go through the same pain.  So I have on occassion raised cash for Macmillan Cancer Relief.  Now that I have turned 43 years old myself, and still have the luxury of good health I have decided to take on a huge challenge.

Jill Pugh and I will cycle off road from John O' Groats to Lands End (JOGLE) in June this year (2009).  We felt that to deserve sponsorship and to raise as much as possible, we needed to push ourselves to the limits of our physical and mental abilities. Hence the "OFF ROAD" approach. And just to add that extra degree of difficulty we will tackle this unsupported, carrying all our own supplies.

So on the 4th of June 09, we ( two women in their early 40's) Jill and I, will set off from John O' Groats hoping to navigate our way along the length of the country, to arrive at Lands End on the 3rd of July.  We will be riding our own mountain bikes over landscapes of varying terrain in all weather conditions. ( Can't rely on a good summer)

See our blog http://offroadjogle.blogspot.com

Meticulous planning has gone into finding a route that will keep us "off road" on bridleways, cycle paths and tracks and also in locating Bed and Breakfast accommodation to stay in at the end of each day's riding.  All planning and organising has been done by us.

Each day we will cycle on average 46 miles, not an easy feat over rough and alien terrain, especially when combined with an average daily climbing of 1290 metres.  On completion we will have ridden 1143 miles and climbed 33 886 metres.  ( Mount Everest is 8850 metres)  This will undoubtedly be the toughest challenge for us to date.  There will be times when we are tired and fed up and want to give up.  It is at those time I will think of the many many Cancer sufferers and remind myself that they don't have the choice of giving up when the going gets tough.

All costs incurred from transport to start point, and return from Lands End, accommodation, food, maps, bike spares and administration will be met by ourselves  So far we estimate this to be in the region of £2500 to £3000. We are taking all our annual leave from work to complete this challenge.
Donating through Justgiving is quick and easy and will ensure the money goes to the charity.

Any amount would be gratefully received.  Cancer is so indiscriminate and any one of us could be a victim at any time.  Macmillan Cancer Support offer a wide variety of support.  www.macmillan.org.uk  . Please pass my page onto your friends as well.  I know that if we hit our target of £10 000, my Mum would be so proud.

Best wishes to you all for 2009.

Ang and Jill
