Alpe d'Huez Triathlon · 23 July 2010
What is the challenge?
The Alpe d’Huez Triathlon, in the South of France, consists of a 1.2KM swim, a 30KM bike challenge, and a 7.3KM run.
Lac Verney’s icy waters are the starting point for the swim. The water will be a chilly 15°c, choppy with a slight current - I have sewn my 5 metre badge onto my wetsuit for good luck! After a quick transition the hard work really begins with the ascent of the infamous Alpe d’Huez. The mountain is regularly ridden as part of the Tour de France. The peak is a relentless 13.8KM climb to 6,100 feet with an average gradient of 8.1% (with some sections at 14%). With the oxygen thinning at this altitude, it will be an epic. When we reach the top, there is just the small matter of a 7.3KM run in the thin air and baking mid summer heat.
It would be amazing if you could give as much as possible. Thank you.
